A significant part of the “I am that I am” collection is filled with memories of Ushatava’s creative director, Nino Shamatava, reflecting on her Georgian roots, family, and her parents’ wardrobe. One result of this introspection is the Georgian Girl dress. This garment inherits key features of a traditional urban dress: a fitted silhouette, wide and long sleeves, a stand-up collar, and a floor-length hem. The black color symbolizes the dignity and modesty of the Georgian people. To make the piece less formal and more suitable for everyday wear, we used the lining material as the main fabric, which was hand-finished to give a wrinkled appearance.
The dress embodies one of Ushatava’s favorite themes, namely transformer items. Along the side seam of the skirt is a row of buttons; by threading them through airy loops on the opposite side of the garment, you can change the appearance of the piece on the body. The long hem gathered at the back forms a “tail,” and when the fabric is secured at the front, a neat tuck emerges.
